What is the cohesion-tension theory of xylem water transport?1 / 10

The cohesion-tension theory explains how water rises through xylem vessels to the tops of tall trees without any pump. Evaporation of water from leaf mesophyll cells into the substomatal air space creates negative pressure (tension) that pulls the entire water column upward. Hydrogen bonding between water molecules (cohesion) keeps this column unbroken, while adhesion of water to the hydrophilic walls of xylem vessels helps counteract gravity and resist column breakage.
