What raw materials go into a blast furnace, and what is each one for?1 / 12
Four raw materials are charged into the top of the furnace: iron ore (hematite, Fe₂O₃) — the source of iron; coke (carbon) — burned as fuel and used as the reducing agent; limestone (calcium carbonate) — added as a flux to remove impurities; and a blast of hot air blown in near the base, which burns the coke and drives the whole process.

What is retrosynthetic analysis, and who formalized it?1 / 9
Retrosynthetic analysis, formalized by E. J. Corey, works backward from a target molecule by applying disconnections — the mental reverse of a known forward reaction — to generate simpler synthetic precursors, repeating until the precursors are commercially available or trivially accessible starting materials. It reframes synthesis planning as a search problem over a tree of possible disconnections rather than a forward guess-and-check process.
What do the single line "|" and double line "||" mean in cell notation?1 / 10
A single vertical line "|" marks a phase boundary — for example between a solid electrode and its surrounding aqueous solution. A double vertical line "||" marks the salt bridge (or porous membrane) separating the two half-cells. Everything to the left of "||" is one half-cell; everything to the right is the other.

What does a combustion analysis apparatus actually measure directly?
AThe mass of CO2 and the mass of H2O produced when a known mass of sample burns completelyBThe percent composition of the sample, read off an instrument displayCThe molar mass of the sample directlyDThe number of moles of oxygen gas consumed
State Faraday's first law of electrolysis in words.1 / 11
The mass of a substance produced (or dissolved) at an electrode during electrolysis is directly proportional to the quantity of electric charge, Q, passed through the cell. Double the charge, double the mass deposited.
Why Salt Melts Icy Roads (and Makes Ice Cream Colder) Salt is just a simple kitchen ingredient. But when you mix it with ice, it does something surprising — it makes it much harder for the water to stay frozen solid. Salt on Icy Sidewalks a
