Chemistry · L5 · The Kinetic Isotope Effect

An experimental tool for testing which step of a proposed mechanism is really rate-determining: replacing a specific hydrogen with deuterium barely changes a molecule's chemistry but does change its vibrations, so measuring how much the reaction slows down (kH/kD) tells you whether that exact bond breaks in the rate-determining step.
