Chemistry · L5 · BINOL (1,1'-Bi-2-naphthol)

The textbook atropisomer: two naphthalene rings joined by a single biaryl bond whose rotation is frozen at room temperature by the fused-ring bulk, giving an indefinitely configurationally stable chiral axis. Its two hydroxyls are the handle for converting it into phosphate and phosphoramidite catalysts.
