Chemistry · L3 · Transition Metals — Variable States and Color
Two observational patterns worth remembering: most transition metals (iron, copper, chromium, manganese) show multiple oxidation states, and their compounds are often vividly colored — unlike main-group metals, which show one fixed state and are usually colorless. The 'why' behind the color is left for later study.
